About Me
Hello! I am Cortney Seymour, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in private practice in New Orleans.
I find genuine enjoyment my work and regard each new client as a unique opportunity to be a part of your change, empowerment and/or healing. I respect that beginning and attending therapy is an important and sometimes challenging step toward a more positive future. Being in therapy means that you believe health and happiness are possible, and you are ready to be an active part in making it your reality.
I have a history of providing services in both inpatient and outpatient settings and assisting clients through individual, group and family counseling. Originally from Louisiana, I received my Master of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. After living and practicing psychotherapy in North Carolina for several years, I returned to Louisiana in 2011 where I practiced in Metairie and Covington before opening my private practice here in New Orleans.
My Specialties
I specialize in working with adults and adolescents who are struggling with depression and anxiety . I am experienced in working with clients coping with eating disorders, having worked at a treatment facility for eating disorders during my years in North Carolina. I also work with clients with emotional disturbances, mood disorders, family conflict, personality disorders, anger management, and developmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders. I work with individuals and couples experiencing difficulty or dissatisfaction in their relationships.
What Therapy Will Be Like With Me
- Through counseling, I believe that we can achieve the most benefit when we are encouraged to express ourselves, understand our emotions and behaviors, and develop viable methods to cope with and thrive in our environment.
- I see counseling as being unique for each person, and I approach each session with genuineness, openness and empathy.
- I believe it is important for you to explore who you are, not just through your past experiences but also through your present emotions, behaviors and future goals. My counseling style includes setting long and short term goals together. This means you will be an active participant in your own therapy and should expect to work, reflect and try new skills.
- I approach counseling through a Person-Centered Approach, which recognizes that you are an individual with a unique history, strengths and potential. You are part of determining the theme of each session. I also utilize a Cognitive-Behavioral Approach and will work with you to identify patterns and develop realistic solutions to issues.
- I believe that counseling should include humor! Both laughter and tears are important parts of change and healing. Serious matters are typically discussed in therapy, but it is healthy to enjoy the process as well.
- Our therapeutic relationship is an important one. We will face difficult issues together and in order to gain the most from therapy, I expect you to be honest and open.
- In my speciality work with adolescents, I believe that good rapport and trust make for great success. I strive to maintain confidentiality within limits so that safe progress can be made toward reaching goals. I always keep parents informed of progress and of any safety concerns that arise but I do not discuss everything that children share with me in confidence.
